What is it?

Most common of hip bursitis

What are the causes?

Iliotibial band (ITB) tightness with excessive friction across trochanter-40 -60 yrs most common

What are the symptoms?

  • Ache over lateral hip and thigh, with minimal limp
  • Worse at night, can’t lie on affected side
  • Swelling may be present
  • Pain may radiate over anterior thigh and knee, with pain on passive external rotation and adduction
  • Possible pain on resisted extension, abduction and internal and external rotation
  • pinpoint tenderness over inflamed bursa 
  • Superimposed bursitis often present with osteoarthritis
