Shin Splints

What is it?

  • Inflammation of the point of attachment of the muscle to the bone
  • NB: this is not associated with stress fracture but has similar features
  • 2 types of shin splints: medial tibial stress syndrome and lateral tibial stress syndrome

What are the symptoms?

  • Pain, inflammation and local swelling increases with exercise and decreases with rest
  • Medial tibial stress syndrome - pain on inside of shin, increased when foot rolls inwards
  • Lateral tibial stress syndrome - pain on inside of shin
  • Visible swelling possible

What are the causes?

  • Runners with pronated feet
  • Hard surface walking/running
  • Poor footwear
  • Anatomic variation, especially causing pronation
  • Poor running technique (increased leg rotation, leg cross over)
