Piriformis Syndrome

What is it?

The sciatic nerve may be irritated as it passes beside or near the head of the piriformis muscle on its way out of the pelvis.

What are the causes?

Stretching or tearing of the muscle itself may be involved, particularly if there is a history of trauma.

What are the symptoms?

  • Very deep seated local buttock pain is due to primary muscle injury, whereas sciatica may arise from nerve irritation, secondary to muscle injury.
  • Unlike sciatica of lumbar origin, this condition is not accompanied by neurological findings or lumbosacral pathology.
